'Miami Vice' is heading back to its roots with a return to the 1980s. Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are officially set to star in 'Miami Vice '85,' a new big-screen adaptation from 'Top Gun: Maverick' director Joseph Kosinski.
Inspired by the 1984 pilot and the original series' first season, the film explores the style, danger and corruption of mid-1980s Miami. Jordan will play Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, while Butler takes on the role of James "Sonny" Crockett. The movie is also being shot for IMAX, signalling a large-scale action experience.
Kosinski continues his run of revisiting iconic 1980s properties after the success of 'Top Gun: Maverick' and 'Tron: Legacy.' The screenplay comes from 'Nightcrawler' filmmaker Dan Gilroy, who recently earned acclaim for his work on 'Andor.'

The project marks Jordan's first new role since his Oscar win for 'Sinners' earlier this year. Before stepping into 'Miami Vice,' both stars had crime dramas on the way. Michael B. Jordan is directing and starring in a new version of 'The Thomas Crown Affair,' while Austin Butler will appear alongside Jeremy Allen White in A24's 'Enemies.'
About The Original 'Miami Vice'
The original 'Miami Vice' debuted on NBC in 1984, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover South Florida detectives. Known for its sharp fashion, fast cars and stylish crime storytelling, the series ran for five seasons and won four Emmy Awards.
The franchise previously returned to theatres in 2006 with Michael Mann's film adaptation starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Though it struggled at the box office at first, the movie later developed a strong cult following.
Now, 'Miami Vice' is preparing for another comeback, with 'Miami Vice '85' set to arrive in theatres on 6th August, 2027.
