Adam Sandler is officially returning for 'Grown Ups 3,' with Netflix confirming that a third film in the popular comedy franchise is now in development.

The announcement was made during Netflix's upfront presentation in New York City. Director Kyle Newacheck, who recently worked with Sandler on 'Happy Gilmore 2,' will helm the project. The script is being written by Sandler and his longtime creative partner, Tim Herlihy.

Details about the story and the full cast have not yet been revealed. Sandler, Herlihy, Jackie Sandler and Jack Giarraputo are producing the movie, while Kevin Grady and Judit Maull will serve as executive producers.

Original 'Grown Ups'

The original 'Grown Ups' was released in 2010 by Sony Pictures and featured a star-studded cast including Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider and Salma Hayek. The comedy followed a group of childhood friends reuniting after the death of their former basketball coach. The film became a major box office success, earning more than $270 million worldwide.

A sequel arrived in 2013, adding new cast members such as Andy Samberg, Taylor Lautner and Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Director Kyle Newacheck has built a strong working relationship with Sandler in recent years. Along with 'Happy Gilmore 2,' he is also known for projects including 'Workaholics' and Netflix's 'Murder Mystery' starring Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.

Rumours about the 'Grown Ups 3' film have circulated for years. Kevin James previously hinted that fans should stay hopeful, while original director Dennis Dugan had also mentioned discussions about another sequel in the past.

Last year, Tim Herlihy suggested that the success of 'Happy Gilmore 2' on streaming had opened the door for more sequels to classic Adam Sandler comedies, making future follow-ups feel more exciting and possible.
