After closing the chapter on one of Hollywood's most iconic action franchises, Tom Cruise may be preparing to return to the world of spies once again. Reports suggest the actor is currently in talks to headline a new espionage thriller titled 'Doppelgänger,' a mysterious high-concept project that is already generating major buzz in Hollywood. The project arrives shortly after the release of 'Mission: Impossible–The Final Reckoning,' which marked Cruise’s final appearance as IMF agent Ethan Hunt after nearly three decades leading the blockbuster franchise.

While neither Cruise nor the studio has officially confirmed the deal, industry insiders say discussions surrounding 'Doppelgänger' are progressing steadily.

Aneesh Chaganty Reportedly Attached to Direct

According to reports, filmmaker Aneesh Chaganty is attached to direct the upcoming thriller. Chaganty is best known for suspense-driven films like 'Searching and Run,' both of which earned praise for their psychological tension and unconventional storytelling style. Sources claim Chaganty has been personally rewriting the screenplay with Cruise in mind.

Reports also suggest the director travelled multiple times to meet Cruise and discuss the project in detail. However, Cruise is expected to make a final decision only after reviewing the completed script. The screenplay reportedly combines psychological intrigue with classic spy-thriller elements, potentially offering Cruise a very different kind of espionage role from the globe-trotting action spectacle of 'Mission: Impossible.'

Plot Revolves Around Dangerous Doubles and Espionage

While official plot details remain under wraps, early reports describe 'Doppelgänger' as a paranoid spy thriller centred around identity manipulation and political deception. The story reportedly follows a CIA agent named Veer who discovers that Russia has recruited a man who looks exactly like him in an attempt to infiltrate American intelligence. Things reportedly spiral further out of control when additional lookalikes begin emerging, blurring the lines between reality, betrayal and conspiracy.

The concept has already sparked comparisons online to psychological thrillers and classic espionage dramas involving double agents and mistaken identities. Reports also mention that the script features "two very meaty lead roles," suggesting the film may involve dual performances or multiple identity twists central to the narrative. The project has also attracted attention because of its impressive production team. Ryan Coogler and Zinzi Coogler are reportedly attached as producers alongside Sev Ohanian, Aneesh Chaganty and Natalie Qasabian.

The film rights were reportedly acquired by Skydance Media in 2025, adding further speculation that the studio sees the project as a major franchise possibility if Cruise officially signs on.

Tom Cruise Continues Busy Post-'Mission: Impossible' Slate

Even as discussions around 'Doppelgänger' continue, Cruise already has several major projects lined up. The actor is expected to star in 'Digger,' directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, later this year. Unlike 'Doppelgänger,' that film reportedly moves away from the spy genre and focuses more on dark satire and political themes. Still, the possibility of Cruise returning to espionage storytelling has excited fans worldwide.

For many viewers, the actor remains closely associated with high-stakes spy action after defining the genre through the 'Mission: Impossible' films. If 'Doppelgänger' moves forward, it could mark the beginning of another intense and potentially franchise-worthy chapter in Cruise's career.
