The renowned actress confessed that she had been diagnosed with an early-onset cataract, a serious clouding of the natural lens of the eye that subtly but significantly interfered with her day-to-day life while she was delivering some of her most memorable on-screen performances.
The Hidden Strain of Early-Onset Cataracts and Restored Vision
The Mayo Clinic states that cataracts cause the lens of the eye to gradually cloud, turning clear vision into something like a window covered in frost. This makes it extremely difficult to read, drive at night, or distinguish human expressions. Hathaway's left eye was so severely affected by the condition that it rendered her legally blind in that eye. "This is maybe too much information," Hathaway said openly on the show.
Hathaway candidly shared during the podcast. "I was half blind for 10 years. It impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye and I wound up getting surgery." The actress said that she had become accustomed to the deficit over time, underestimating the significant psychological and physical toll it required before corrective surgery ultimately resolved the issue.
"I've calmed down since then," Hathaway reflected on her recovery. "I didn't realize it was actually taxing my nervous system. And I didn't realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum."
The actress describes being able to see well when she wakes up as a true blessing and expresses thankfulness for her totally restored vision today. "I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day, I wake up and I get to see the way that I do, it's a miracle," she added.
"I actually am like, Oh, two generations back, that wouldn't have been an option for someone like me. So, I actually do feel very connected to that kind of a miracle."
Addressing Cosmetic Rumours and Looking Ahead to an Epic Slate
Beyond her visual difficulties, Hathaway utilized her position to firmly put an end to heated online rumors about her appearance. Recently, there have been widespread speculations on the internet that the actress underwent extensive cosmetic treatments in order to preserve her distinctive, youthful appearance.
