Zazie Beetz goes through a massive ordeal in the new action-horror film 'They Will Kill You,' and the experience behind the scenes was just as intense. Speaking with her co-star Patricia Arquette, the 34-year-old actress revealed that the most gruelling part of the shoot wasn't the fake blood or the heavy weaponry, but rather filming in artificial rain during the winter in Cape Town.
Zazie Beetz's Experience
Beetz explained that the production had to use freezing water because warm water creates steam that interferes with the camera. Even though these moments only appear as brief segments in the final movie, the process felt like it took up the entire shoot. She recalled spending 12-hour nights outside in the cold and noted that no amount of money or heating equipment can truly take away the chill when you are that deeply frozen.

To get through the physical toll of her first lead role, Beetz had to mentally commit to the project and tap into a primal sense of survival. Arquette praised her co-star's incredible stamina, describing the filming process as a constant marathon. She remembered Zazie Beetz performing dozens of takes for high-speed action sequences, running down hallways repeatedly from various angles to get the perfect shot.
The film, directed by Kirill Sokolov, is a high-energy mix of martial arts, horror, and comedy. Arquette, who plays a hotel employee named Lily Woodhouse, described the set as a fast-paced and fluid environment where the crew often had to make quick, creative changes on the fly.

To recover from the "psychosis" of the intense filming schedule, Zazie Beetz relied on naps and plenty of quiet time alone at home to decompress. She pushed through the hardest days by imagining the eventual press tour, telling herself that one day she would be sitting happily with Arquette to talk about her accomplishments. Now that the movie is finished, Zazie Beetz feels she successfully manifested that exact moment of relief.
'They Will Kill You' officially arrives in theatres on 27th March.
