One of television's most iconic reality franchises is officially preparing to say goodbye. 'Big Brother,' the long-running reality competition series that changed unscripted television forever, is ending after its upcoming 28th season.
The announcement arrives just as the franchise crosses a historic milestone of more than 1000 episodes worldwide, marking the end of an era for a format that has dominated pop culture conversations, live feeds, and reality TV fandom for decades.
The End of a Reality TV Giant
'Big Brother' swiftly rose to prominence as one of the most popular reality TV shows ever since it debuted in the Netherlands in 1999. The show’s straightforward yet fascinating premise, strangers coexisting under continual observation while vying for a monetary prize, completely transformed modern-day reality television.
As time went on, several versions of the format were introduced in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, India, and a number of other nations.

In particular, the North American editions became a cultural phenomenon. The American version, which began on CBS in July 2000, gradually developed into a summertime television mainstay, renowned for its dramatic alliances, live evictions, blindsides, and constant online fan debates.
At its peak, 'Big Brother' was one of the first reality series to successfully integrate television with round-the-clock digital live streams, drawing millions of people each episode. According to reports, the franchise has now crossed more than 1000 episodes globally, a rare milestone achieved by only a handful of reality programs in television history.
But after Season 27 wrapped earlier this year, speculation about the future of the franchise began growing rapidly. After carrying the franchise for decades, Global and Corus Entertainment have confirmed they are stepping away from the series.

Jennifer Abrams, Senior Vice President of Content and Marketing at Corus Entertainment, addressed the decision in an official statement shared by Global News: "We are incredibly proud to have been the Canadian home of 'Big Brother' since its launch in 2000, bringing this series to audiences nationwide," Abrams said. "As we look ahead, we've made the decision to move on from the series and refresh Global’s summer lineup."
She further explained that the network wants to focus on "broad, mainstream hits and new formats designed to engage audiences across both linear and streaming." While the show still maintains a loyal fanbase, insiders reportedly felt the timing was right to close the chapter on one of television’s longest-running reality experiments.

Season 28 Returns With A Major Change
'Big Brother' is returning for another season in the United States, despite Global's long-standing affiliation with the series coming to an end. Officially scheduled to debut on 9th July, Season 28 of the reality competition series will be hosted this time by seasoned host Julie Chen Moonves. This season's contestants will vie for the enormous US$750,000 final prize, maintaining the high-stakes structure that made the reality show so popular throughout the world.
Additionally, the companion content for the next season is expanding. On 10th July, 'Big Brother: Unlocked,' which is hosted by past winners Taylor Hale and Derrick Levasseur, will make a comeback with behind-the-scenes videos, strategy talks, and exclusive updates for devoted viewers.

In order to give viewers a lengthy opening week full of surprises, alliances, and early games drama, CBS has also scheduled a special 90-minute show for 12th July. Based on reports, the coming season may have a strong nostalgic bent in addition to new gameplay elements meant to appeal to younger players.
A Television Legacy That Changed Reality TV Forever
Few reality shows have been able to maintain their cultural relevance for as long as 'Big Brother.' Years before streaming culture became popular, the show's combination of live feeds, online fan clubs, social media conversations, and real-time viewer participation dramatically changed how people interacted with television, even beyond its ratings success.

From legendary alliances and shocking betrayals to controversial twists and unforgettable winners, ‘Big Brother’ built a legacy that stretched far beyond the walls of the famous house. And while Global may be closing one chapter, Season 28 proves the franchise still has one more major summer left before reality TV history fully turns the page.
