BTS leader RM, whose real name is Kim Nam-joon, has been indefinitely suspended from The Pixel Project's "16 Male Role Models Helping to Stop Violence Against Women" list. On 19th August, the international nonprofit organization made the announcement in response to criticism of RM's affiliation with Chris Brown.
RM was acknowledged for his efforts on gender equality, his willingness to face his own preconceived notions, and his support of women in the arts when he was added to the organization's 2024 list.

Why Was RM Recognised?
RM's documented development on issues related to feminism and misogyny served as the foundation for the Pixel Project's recognition.
According to its 2024 profile, RM enrolled in women's and gender studies classes and spoke with a professor about his songs after BTS' lyrics were criticized in 2016.

In the 2023 BTS biography 'Beyond The Story,' RM reflected on that period, saying, "Because I was criticized early on, I could recognize the problem sooner."
He also used his platform to highlight feminist literature, including Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982, and celebrated Korean artist Rha Hye-Seok, a key figure in Korea's feminist movement.
What Triggered the Backlash?
The controversy began on 12th August, when RM and fellow BTS member J-Hope attended Chris Brown's concert in Toronto. Brown later uploaded a picture of himself with the two BTS members, while J-Hope shared recordings from Brown’s performance.

Due to Brown's established history of violence against women, including his 2009 felony assault conviction involving Rihanna, the photograph immediately attracted criticism. In 2026, Brown also entered a guilty plea to affray in the UK.
The Pixel Project criticized RM's continued silence, calling it "deafening," but claimed it had waited for him to address the situation. Additionally, the organization stated that it would examine and update its Father's Day opinion piece from 15th June, 2025, which cited RM as an example of a "imperfect positive male role model."

Its statement ended with a pointed message: "Being a decent human being also means being accountable when your choices hurt other people."
What Happens Next?
Rather than being permanently removed, RM is currently suspended indefinitely. That means that if the circumstances change, the recognition might be reconsidered.
The immediate problem, though, is accountability: whether RM responds to the criticism, justifies his choice to go to the performance, or responds to concerns from fans and organisations focused on violence against women.
The controversy also puts renewed attention on the gap between a public figure's past advocacy and how audiences judge their actions today. For RM, what happens next may depend as much on his response to the controversy as on the original photograph itself.
