The Metropolitan Museum of Art has officially revealed the theme for the 2027 Met Gala, and it has already become one of the most talked-about announcements in fashion. The upcoming Costume Institute exhibition, "John Galliano: Horizons," will celebrate the career of legendary British designer John Galliano while also confronting the controversy that nearly ended it.
The fashion industry is split over the choice; some appreciated Galliano's artistic legacy, while others wonder if he deserves any recognition at all.
John Galliano Takes Center Stage at the 2027 Met Gala
The Costume Institute's spring exhibition will debut during the 2027 Met Gala on Monday, 3rd May, 2027, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The exhibition, titled "John Galliano: Horizons," will be the first significant museum retrospective devoted to Galliano's four-decade career and just the third time the Costume Institute has focused on a living designer, after Rei Kawakubo in 2017 and Yves Saint Laurent in 1983.
Along with sketches, research materials, archival documents, and accessories, the exhibition will showcase over 200 pieces of clothing that trace Galliano's career from his graduate collection at Central Saint Martins in 1984 to his significant years at Givenchy, Dior, and Maison Margiela.
The public exhibition will run from 9th May, 2027, to 9th January, 2028, while details about the gala's co-chairs, dress code and host committee are still under wraps.
Why the Theme Has Sparked Backlash
The controversy began when Galliano was fired as Dior's creative director in 2011 for making racist and antisemitic comments in separate incidents at a Paris café. A French court later found him guilty of hate crimes.
Galliano has since entered therapy, issued a public apology, and has clarified time and again that he takes full responsibility for his actions. His personal journey was also explored in the 2024 documentary 'High & Low–John Galliano.'
Even so, critics argue that honouring him with fashion's biggest night risks overshadowing the harm caused by his past behaviour, while supporters believe his artistic achievements and subsequent efforts toward accountability deserve recognition.
How the Met Is Addressing the Controversy
The Costume Institute claims that rather than ignoring Galliano's past, the show will look closely at both his innovative inventiveness and his darker periods. The exhibition, according to curator Andrew Bolton, offers a chance to examine Galliano's "creative imagination" while acknowledging a break in his career.
Anna Wintour also defended the decision, saying the exhibition would honestly engage with the "darkness" surrounding Galliano's story instead of ignoring it.
Even though the gala is about a year away, the announcement has already sparked broader discussions about accountability, redemption, and whether or not personal behaviour and artistic talent can coexist. One thing is certain: the 2027 Met Gala is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched editions in the event's history.
