More than three decades after changing hip-hop forever, Snoop Dogg is getting the Hollywood treatment. The long-awaited biopic of the rap superstar, which will provide fans an intimate glimpse into the life of one of the most significant and well-known figures in music, has officially been released by Universal Pictures.

From Long Beach to Global Hip-Hop Royalty

Snoop Dogg, who was born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. on 20th October, 1971, emerged from the streets of Long Beach, California, to become a key figure in West Coast hip-hop. After being found by Dr. Dre, his career took off in 1992.

He first appeared on the popular single 'Deep Cover' and then played a significant part on Dre's seminal album 'The Chronic'.

Snoop's breakthrough album 'Doggystyle' (1993), which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and solidified his place in rap history, was released just a year later.

Since then, he has sold more than 35 million records worldwide, earned 17 Grammy nominations, built successful businesses, ventured into film, television and sports, and transformed himself into a global entertainment icon.

He is one of the most well-known figures in popular culture, and his influence goes well beyond music.

What We Know About the Upcoming Snoop Dogg Biopic

The untitled R-rated Snoop Dogg biopic will be released in theaters on 6th August, 2027, according to Universal Pictures. Renowned director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) will direct the movie, which stars Jonathan Daviss, best known for Netflix's 'Outer Banks,' as the iconic rapper.

Additionally, Brewer and Joe Robert Cole are co-writing the screenplay. The movie is being produced by Snoop Dogg himself alongside Brian Grazer and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker, ensuring the rapper has a direct hand in telling his own story.

The movie is anticipated to follow Snoop's rise from Long Beach to become a rap superstar, entrepreneur, and cultural phenomenon, though the studio has not disclosed the entire plot.

Speaking about the project at CinemaCon, Snoop said, "After my brothers told their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it's time to tell mine."

Why This Biopic Could Be One of Hip-Hop's Biggest Films

Music biopics continue to dominate Hollywood, and Universal hopes Snoop Dogg's story will join the success of films like 'Straight Outta Compton' and '8 Mile'.

Few musicians have maintained their cultural relevance for as long as Snoop, who transformed from a pioneer of gangsta rap to a television personality, businessman, actor, and Olympic fan favorite without losing his distinctive sound.

With Snoop actively involved in the production and Jonathan Daviss stepping into one of music's most iconic roles, expectations are already running high.
