Football icon Lionel Messi and Marvel's friendly neighborhood superhero have collided in one of the most unexpected crossovers of 2026. In just a few hours, a recently released 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' promotional video starring Tom Holland and Messi has amassed millions of views on social media.

While the clip is part of Sony Pictures' global marketing campaign, it has also fueled fresh excitement for the highly anticipated fourth 'Spider-Man' film, which is set to hit theaters next year.

Messi and Tom Holland's Viral Promo Becomes the Internet's Favorite Crossover

Sony Pictures dropped the short promotional clip on 30th June, as part of its ongoing campaign for 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day.' The teaser opens with Tom Holland, dressed casually, teasing fans about the upcoming film before an unexpected visitor steals the spotlight—eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi.

The football legend enters wearing a cool jacket with Spider-Man's trademark emblem, quickly surprising both Holland and viewers.

Before Holland gives Messi Spider-Man-inspired stuff, including a customized gift box, the two engage in lighthearted banter. The pair reenacts Spider-Man's trademark web-shooting position at the end of the promo, which has since grown to be one of the most popular entertainment videos on the internet.

The unusual pairing was praised by fans on X, Instagram, and TikTok, who referred to it as "the crossover nobody expected but everyone needed."

Neither Sony Pictures nor Marvel Studios has confirmed any payment details, but social media posts and entertainment blogs allegedly claim that Lionel Messi was paid $15 million for his roughly 20-second appearance in the 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' promotional teaser.

What We Know About 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'

Tom Holland will make his fourth solo appearance as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on 31st July, 2026, when 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' opens in theaters. The film, which is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, is based on the events of 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' (2021), in which Doctor Strange's reality-altering spell caused everyone to forget who Peter Parker was.

The title is inspired by Marvel Comics' 'Brand New Day' plot, which centers on Peter recreating his life after losing his public persona, even though Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have kept the story mainly under wraps.

Zendaya plays MJ again, Holland plays Peter Parker again, and Jacob Batalon plays Ned Leeds again. There has been a lot of fan curiosity since Sadie Sink and Liza Colón-Zayas joined the ensemble in unannounced roles.

With the official start of production in June 2026, Marvel progressively increased the scope of its marketing campaign with celebrity partnerships, teaser videos, and behind-the-scenes looks.

To keep the debate going, the studio has relied on pop culture moments like the Messi crossover rather than disclosing story secrets.

Why the Promo Matters Beyond Marvel Fans

The collaboration between Messi and Tom Holland proves how modern blockbuster promotion is moving beyond posters and trailers. Sony has produced a marketing moment that appeals to football enthusiasts, moviegoers, and casual social media users equally by uniting one of the most well-known athletes in the world with one of Hollywood's biggest superhero performers.

For Marvel, the strategy is already paying off. With millions of views and thousands of fan replies in its first day, the viral video has generated enormous online interaction, indicating that 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is already one of the most talked-about superhero releases well before of its theatrical launch.
