The French Riviera will be the official destination of one of Hollywood's largest action franchises. The upcoming 2026 Cannes Film Festival will feature a special midnight showing of 'The Fast & Furious,' the street-racing blockbuster that started a worldwide phenomenon. The occasion will mark 25 years of the wildly popular franchise, which began as a modest street racing film and has grown to become one of the highest-grossing action series in cinematic history.
The announcement has already created major excitement among fans, especially as several cast members are expected to attend the screening on the famous Croisette.
Cannes Brings Back the Film That Started It All
The 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be held in Cannes, France, from 12th May to 23rd May, 2026. This year's roster is bringing some blockbuster excitement to its esteemed slate of films. The legendary Grand Théâtre Lumière will host a special midnight screening of the original 'The Fast & Furious' on 13th May.
Rob Cohen's film, which debuted in June 2001, featured Vin Diesel and Paul Walker as Dominic Toretto and Brian O'Conner. Nobody could have guessed at the time that the movie's blend of action, loyalty, street racing, and family would become a global entertainment phenomenon.

The movie became an instant hit and helped redefine early 2000s action cinema with its stylish racing scenes and emotionally driven characters. The franchise ultimately included international heists, covert missions, and enormous stunt scenes that were shot in several different nations. Over time, it developed far beyond illicit street races. According to festival organisers, the midnight screening is meant to honour the film's lasting impact on popular culture and cinema history.
A Billion-Dollar Franchise Returns to the Spotlight
One of Universal Pictures' most profitable franchises to date, it started off as a quite modest action thriller. One of the most lucrative action movie franchises in history, the 'The Fast & Furious' saga has made over $7 billion at the box office across eleven films. Alongside Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker, the series has featured stars including Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron, and John Cena.

Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, producer Neal H. Moritz, and Meadow Walker, the late star Paul Walker's daughter, all anticipated to attend the special Cannes screening. Michelle Rodriguez may also attend, according to reports. The franchise's comeback to Cannes shows the extent to which the show has permeated popular culture throughout the world over the past 25 years.
Universal has also confirmed that a new chapter titled 'Fast Forever' is currently scheduled for release in 2028, proving that the franchise still has plenty of fuel left in the tank.
