More than two decades after stealing Christmas, the Grinch could be making a comeback. According to reports that surfaced on 19th June, a follow-up to the popular live-action holiday movie from 2000 Jim Carrey is in talks to play the legendary role again in 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas,' which is officially under development. The project would reunite much of the original creative team and mark one of the most surprising legacy sequels currently in the works.
A Holiday Classic Returns After 26 Years
'How the Grinch Stole Christmas,' directed by Ron Howard and based on the beloved Dr. Seuss tale, was released on 17th November, 2000. The movie, which starred Jim Carrey as the green, Christmas-hating Grinch, was a huge commercial success, making over $345 million worldwide despite having a projected $123 million budget.

It also won the Academy Award for Best Makeup, with Carrey's transformative performance becoming a defining part of holiday pop culture. Twenty-six years later, Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are apparently working on a sequel.
Jim Carrey is currently in talks to play the Grinch once more, while Ron Howard is anticipated to return as director and producer alongside Brian Grazer. The screenplay will be written by screenwriters Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, who are most recognized for their comedic work on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.'

Will Jim Carrey Really Return?
The biggest question surrounding the sequel is Carrey's involvement. The actor previously described filming the original movie as "insane" due to the lengthy makeup process and restrictive costume. According to reports, the physical challenges of changing into the persona every day almost caused him to quit the project.
Despite that challenging experience, sources say he is now in talks to return. Modern visual-effects technology and motion-capture techniques could potentially make the process far easier than it was in 2000.

What Could The Sequel Be About and When Will It Release?
Industry reports indicate that the movie may return the Grinch years after his redemption, examining a fresh issue involving Whoville and the holiday season, even though Universal has not revealed an official plot. Beyond Carrey’s discussions, no casting announcements have been made, and a release date has not yet been disclosed. However, given the early stage of development, a theatrical release in late 2027 or 2028 appears more likely than a 2026 debut.
For now, fans can look forward to the possibility of seeing one of cinema's most memorable holiday characters return to the big screen after more than a quarter-century.
