Tom Cruise managed to visit the set of the new 'Star Wars' movie on the one day the film's lead, Ryan Gosling, wasn't there. Gosling shared the funny story during a recent appearance on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast while promoting his other sci-fi project, 'Project Hail Mary.' It turns out the 63-year-old action icon didn't just drop by to say hello—he actually got behind the camera to help film a scene.
Ryan Gosling Shares Tom Cruise's Unexpected Visit
The 45-year-old actor explained to host Josh Horowitz that he had been working on the movie the entire time, but during his single day off, he received a surprising photo from director Shawn Levy. The picture showed Levy and co-star Flynn Grey covered in mud with Tom Cruise. Gosling was shocked to learn that Cruise had flown his own helicopter directly onto the set.

According to Gosling, the crew was in the middle of filming when they heard a helicopter and had to stop. To everyone's surprise, it was Cruise landing right in the centre of the action. He reportedly picked up a camera and started filming a sequence himself. Gosling noted that it was an incredible moment for his young costar, Flynn Grey, to be filmed by a legend during one of his first big movies. Still, Ryan Gosling joked that he hoped it was just an accident that Cruise waited for the exact day he was absent to make an appearance.
Director Shawn Levy previously mentioned that Cruise didn't mind ruining his expensive shoes in the mud while operating the camera for a lightsaber duel. Levy told the New York Times that audiences will eventually be able to see exactly which part of the movie was shot by Cruise, which he found incredibly cool.

The film, titled 'Star Wars: Starfighter,' features a massive cast including Amy Adams and Matt Smith and is set about five years after the events of 'The Rise of Skywalker.' While fans will have to wait until May 2027 to see Cruise's camera work in the Star Wars universe, they can catch Ryan Gosling in 'Project Hail Mary,' which is out in theatres now.
