Keanu Reeves is set to lead the voice cast of 'Hidari,' an upcoming Japanese stop-motion samurai feature directed by Masashi Kawamura. The announcement was made during the Annecy Animation Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival, instantly generating excitement among animation and action-film fans worldwide. The feature-length project expands Kawamura's viral 2023 proof-of-concept short film of the same name, which has attracted nearly five million views on YouTube since its release. The short became widely praised for its intricate wooden-puppet animation style, kinetic samurai action and emotionally driven storytelling.

Inspired by the Legend of Jingoro Hidari

'Hidari' takes inspiration from stories surrounding the legendary Edo-era craftsman Jingoro Hidari, a near-mythical Japanese sculptor and carpenter. In the film, Reeves will voice the central character, who embarks on a brutal journey of revenge after losing his father figure, fiancée and even his right arm due to a betrayal connected to the reconstruction of Edo Castle.

According to reports, the devastated craftsman transforms his grief into determination, creating a series of mechanical prosthetic arms that become weapons in his quest for justice.

Accompanied by a wooden companion known as the "Sleeping Cat," Jingoro battles conspiracies, mechanical enemies and political corruption in feudal Japan. The film blends historical mythology with stylised action and fantasy-inspired elements, giving the story a tone many online viewers have compared to franchises like 'Sekiro,' 'John Wick,' and 'Cyberpunk 2077.'

Keanu Reeves Praises the Project's Vision

In a statement shared after the announcement, Reeves expressed admiration for the creative ambition behind 'Hidari.' The actor said he was deeply impressed by the project's artistic direction and the evolution from its original short film into a full-scale feature. Director Masashi Kawamura also revealed that Reeves had always been at the top of his dream casting list. Interestingly, Kawamura admitted that while writing the screenplay, he frequently referenced Reeves' John Wick films as tonal inspiration for the action and emotional intensity of the story.

The collaboration marks another unusual and ambitious role choice for Reeves, who has increasingly explored animation and voice acting projects in recent years. The actor previously voiced Duke Caboom in 'Toy Story 4,' Shadow in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3,' and Johnny Silverhand in the video game 'Cyberpunk 2077.' The upcoming film is being developed as a 90-minute stop-motion feature by Japanese studios dwarf, Whatever Co. and TECARAT. Kawamura is directing and co-writing the film alongside a creative team known for blending traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern cinematic techniques.

Animation fans have especially praised the project's handcrafted visual style, which uses carved wooden puppets and miniature sets to recreate feudal Japan. Behind-the-scenes footage from the original short previously went viral for showcasing the painstaking stop-motion process used to animate sword fights, facial expressions and mechanical transformations.

Fans React to the Casting Announcement

Online reactions to Reeves joining the project have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Reddit users described the combination of "stop-motion + samurai + Keanu" as a perfect match, with many calling the film an instant "cult classic in the making." Several fans also celebrated the fact that the viral short is finally receiving a full-length adaptation after years of anticipation. Others noted that Reeves' calm but intense screen persona feels naturally suited to the wandering samurai archetype central to the film.

While no official release date has been announced yet, 'Hidari' is already shaping up to be one of the most visually distinctive animated projects currently in development. With Keanu Reeves attached and global interest rapidly growing, the stop-motion samurai epic could become one of the breakout animation events of the coming years.
