Billie Eilish is officially moving from the recording booth to the big screen.
Reports surfaced recently that the 24-year-old pop icon is in talks to make her feature film acting debut in a new adaptation of Sylvia Plath's literary classic, 'The Bell Jar.' While this marks her first major movie role, Eilish is no stranger to the Oscars; she already holds two Academy Awards for her songwriting work on 'Barbie' and 'No Time to Die.'

The project is in the hands of director Sarah Polley, who is fresh off her Oscar win for 'Women Talking.' Polley will both write and direct the film for Focus Features, tackling the heavy themes of Plath’s only published novel. The story serves as a powerful look at mental illness through the eyes of a talented young artist who slowly loses her grip on reality. It explores the intense pressures of fame, feminism, and ambition, showing how a brilliant mind can be gradually worn down by societal expectations.

Billie Eilish is set to play the lead role of Esther Greenwood. The story follows Esther as she struggles with her mental health during a high-profile internship at a New York City magazine. Hollywood has been attempting to bring a fresh version of this story to life for twenty years. Over the decades, big names like Kirsten Dunst and Dakota Fanning were linked to various adaptations, but for one reason or another, those projects simply never made it to the big screen.

Fans can also catch her in theatres even sooner; her 3D concert documentary, directed by James Cameron, arrives on 8th May. That film covers the creation of her latest album, which recently earned her another Song of the Year trophy at the 2026 Grammys.
Meanwhile, Sarah Polley stays busy on both sides of the camera, having recently made a cameo in Seth Rogen's series 'The Studio' while developing a new project inspired by her own whirlwind experiences during awards season.
