In an era where Gen Z scrolls past content in seconds, very few shows manage to hold their attention. In 2026, that show is 'Off Campus.' Prime Video has officially found its next mega-hit, and Gen Z cannot look away. The college hockey romance 'Off Campus' had little pre-release anticipation when it debuted on the platform on 13th May, but it quickly exploded into a bona fide cultural phenomenon. Amazon recently revealed that the show attracted an unbelievable 36 million viewers worldwide in its first 12 days alone.

This milestone firmly cements it as Prime Video's third-biggest series debut of all time—trailing only heavyweights 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' and 'Fallout'—and ranks as the number one debut season ever among women ages 18 to 34.

Based on Elle Kennedy's bestselling 'Off Campus' novels, younger audiences are completely hooked on Briar University's chaotic mix of elite sports, heavy emotional trauma, and undeniable passion.

The Perfect Gen Z Romance Formula

What exactly sets this show apart from typical young adult dramas? 'Off Campus,' which is based on Elle Kennedy's best-selling book series and was adapted by Louisa Levy, combines refreshing real-world maturity with high-stakes love fantasy. The first season followed reserved songwriter Hannah Wells (Ella Bright) and golden-boy hockey captain Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) in their "opposites attract," fake-dating-to-real-loving relationship.

While their onscreen chemistry is electric and deeply earned, Gen Z is particularly praising how the show navigates heavy themes like the aftermath of sexual assault and parental abuse with extreme sincerity. One of the most talked-about topics on the internet has been the chemistry between actors Ella Bright and Belmont Cameli.

Viewers have praised how realistic and natural their connection feels on screen. Fans have acknowledged in Reddit discussions that they have rewatched episodes several times and even signed up for Prime Video just to watch the series.

Additionally, the series portrays mutual consent, emotional honesty, and straightforward communication as inherently attractive traits rather than as checklists. This thoughtful framing provides a welcome upgrade to a generation tired of old romantic comedy tropes that aged poorly.

The Viral Fashion Moment That Broke the Internet

Beyond the primary romance, the show's subplots and viral moments on the internet have attracted viewers too. A massive talking point of the first season involves secondary couple, Allie Hayes (Mika Abdalla) and charm-machine Dean Di Laurentis (Stephen Kalyn), sharing a scene where Allie wears a meticulous recreation of Jennifer Lopez's iconic green Versace jungle dress from the 2000 Grammy Awards.

The scenario became so popular on the internet that JLo herself reshared the video on X, referring to the show as her "new obsession. Love this shooooww."

Costume designer Charlene Akuamoah revealed on Instagram that sourcing and perfecting the fabric required extensive work, noting that Abdalla was "taped within an inch of her life" to pull off the legendary look. In an interview with the Outlet, the actress also admitted that her intuition led her to believe that the scene which isn't included in book series, on which the show is based, would resonate with audiences.

"I had a feeling, especially because it happened so early on," she said, before adding, "When we were getting close to the dress being finished, and I saw what it was going to [look like], when we were shooting it, I was like, huh, I think people are going to like this."

Moments like this, combined with a nostalgic early-2000s energy reminiscent of '10 Things I Hate About You,' have made the show endlessly shareable.

Everything We Know About the Steamy Season 2

With the show breaking records, fans are excited that Prime Video gave 'Off Campus' an early Season 2 renewal back in February. In order to maintain the viewer's massive momentum, showrunner Louisa Levy has announced that Season 2 will immediately begin translating the third novel, 'The Score,' with Dean and Allie serving as the new main leading couple.

"We are so excited to continue Allie and Dean's story as our primary romance of season 2 after kickstarting their romance in season 1," Levy shared in an official statement, reassuring fans that Hannah and Garrett will still remain "an integral part" of the ensemble.

The cast will return to Vancouver to film the Briar U campus between the 1st June–18th September, 2026, filming period. Exciting new characters, such as 'Hamilton' actress Phillipa Soo and India Fowler as Grace Ivers, will also be featured in the forthcoming eight-episode season, which is projected to premiere in the spring of 2027 and promise even more dramatic, fast-paced romance.

'Off Campus' is based on Elle Kennedy's best-selling 'Off Campus Universe,' a collection of over 50 romance and current fiction books that have been translated into more than 25 languages and sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Season One proved that the adaptation could match the fervor of the source material, which has the kind of devoted fanbase that streaming shows dream about. Overall, Season Two has every reason to go further.
