One of the most extreme and controversial horror films of the 1980s is being remade. Robert Pattinson and Parker Finn are set to remake the 1981 film ‘Possession.' According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pattinson will produce the film and might also star in it.

The project is still in its early stages, with the script yet to be completed. Several studios, including A24, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros, are vying for the film. Parker Finn, known for the hit 2022 horror film ‘Smile’ and its upcoming sequel, is attached to write and direct the remake. Pattinson will produce and possibly star in the film.

Pattinson, who has moved away from his heartthrob image with a series of edgy roles, was last seen in ‘The Batman’ (2022). He is set to reprise his role in its sequel and in Bong Joon-ho's highly anticipated sci-fi film ‘Mickey 17,' due in January 2025.

‘Possession’ revolves around the crumbling marriage of international spy Mark (originally played by Sam Neill) and his wife Anna (originally played by Isabelle Adjani) in 1980s West Berlin. The plot is ambiguous, involving doppelgängers, murder, and Anna's relationship with a Lovecraftian creature, reflecting the director Andrzej Żuławski's painful divorce.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1981, where Adjani won the Best Actress Award for her performance. Due to its graphic content, including a notorious miscarriage scene, the film was highly controversial, particularly in the UK, where it was heavily censored. However, in recent years, it has been reappraised as a psychological horror masterpiece, comparable to Roman Polanski's ‘Repulsion’.

Finn will produce the ‘Possession’ remake through his Bad Feeling production company, while Pattinson will produce via Icki Eneo Arlo. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment will also produce, following his success with the creature feature "Barbarian." The remake is still in early development, with no studio, casting, or release date announced yet. Stay tuned for future updates.
