The world of Panem is once again ready to ignite as Lionsgate officially dropped the first footage for 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' this weekend. With a combined global box office total of over $3.3 billion, 'The Hunger Games' is one of the most popular film franchises in history. Its sharp social criticism and high-stakes survival drama has consistently captivated moviegoers. This new prequel, directed by Francis Lawrence—the visionary behind four of the previous five films—revisits the dystopian landscape 24 years before Katniss Everdeen ever volunteered as tribute.

The plot, which takes place on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games reaping, centers on young Haymitch Abernathy as he is forced into the arena for the Second Quarter Quell.

Fans are eager to return to the districts to see the beginnings of one of the series' most complicated and cherished winners, even though the commercial stakes are high based on the electric response to the first glimpse.

A Lethal Quarter Quell and the Faces of the Past

The recently released footage offers a bone-chilling glimpse into the Second Quarter Quell, a unique iteration of the Games where the Capitol famously doubled the body count, reaping 48 children instead of the usual 24. In stark contrast to the terrible reality of the 48 tributes struggling for survival, the trailer suggests a visually arresting production that leans toward the colourful yet hideous splendour of the Capitol.

Central to the footage is Joseph Zada, who steps into the iconic boots of Haymitch Abernathy, originally made famous by Woody Harrelson.

Alongside District 12's Maysilee Donner, played by Mckenna Grace, we witness a younger, possibly more idealistic Haymitch grappling with the weight of his reaping. It's interesting to note that the teaser also confirms Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence's reappearance in what are reportedly moving flash-forward scenes that connect this prequel to the original trilogy.

The footage suggests a runtime that will deeply explore the tactical brutality of the 50th Games, promising a "big fight" that is as emotional as it is visceral.

A Powerhouse Cast and the Countdown to November 2026

In addition to the tributes, the prequel's ensemble cast reads like a Hollywood "who's who," giving the production a great deal of prestige. The footage gave fans their first look at Maya Hawke as the young Wiress and Kieran Culkin as the charismatic, yet undoubtedly sinister, host Caesar Flickerman.

A terrifying highlight was Ralph Fiennes' transition into middle-aged President Coriolanus Snow, depicting the despot at the pinnacle of his authority. Elle Fanning as a stylized, younger Effie Trinket and Jesse Plemons as a young Plutarch Heavensbee are two more noteworthy appearances.

Billy Ray's script, which was adapted from Suzanne Collins' 2025 novel, painstakingly builds a bridge to the well-known history. 'Sunrise on the Reaping,' which is slated to open in theaters and IMAX on 20th November, 2026, is already positioning itself as the year's most anticipated cinematic event, promising to reveal exactly how the horrors of the Second Quarter Quell forged the man who would eventually help Katniss Everdeen take down the Capitol.
