Kelly Clarkson isn't interested in taking a seat as an 'American Idol' judge. The original Idol winner shared her thoughts at the 2024 Daytime Emmy Awards.
Chatting with Entertainment Tonight, Clarkson discussed the idea of replacing Katy Perry on the ABC singing reality show. Her response was clear: “No. No. I can't do that.” Why? It's all about a promise to her kids. Clarkson explained that accepting the role would mean relocating to LA, which is why she left The Voice. “I love that team. And I miss them so much,” she added.
For context, Clarkson recently moved her talk show to New York to be closer to her children.

Back in October 2023, Clarkson told USA Today that learning not to overcommit played a big part in her decision to leave The Voice. “I've learned a lot about what I'm capable of handling, and also what you should not handle,” she said at the time. “That was me saying ‘bye’ to The Voice and having this big move,” she added.
Reiterating her stance to ET, the 'Since U Been Gone' singer emphasised her desire for a balanced life with her kids. “We enjoy the park every day and we enjoy each other,” she said. “As a parent — people get this — you only get so much time until they don't want to hang out with you. That's the reason (I can't do Idol). It's my kiddos,” she added.

As for Perry, her replacement is still up in the air. The singer, who has been with Idol since 2018, announced her departure in February, expressing a desire to “feel that pulse to my own beat.” “I love the show so much, but I wanna go see the world and maybe bring new music,” Perry said on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Perry’s co-judges, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, have suggested names like Meghan Trainor and Jelly Roll, but no final decision has been made. Richie stressed the importance of finding someone who connects with the younger audience, while Perry highlighted the need for a judge who offers constructive criticism and isn't afraid to speak their mind.
