The creators of ‘Inside Out 2’ recently shared that they collaborated with a group of teen advisers to better understand teenage behaviour and shape Riley’s character for the sequel. The new instalment, which follows the 2015 hit, has already garnered a lot of love from audiences since its release in theatres. Director Kelsey Mann, in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, explained that the team needed a precise understanding of the emotions a 13-year-old could experience. To achieve this, Mann and his crew sought direct insights from teenagers.

Riley, the protagonist in the first film, was depicted in her early childhood, with primary emotions like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear guiding her actions. In the latest release, Riley has grown into a teenager and entered puberty, bringing new emotional complexities. To authentically portray these changes, the filmmakers consulted adolescent focus groups.

Mann elaborated on their approach, stating, "We essentially had a Zoom room full of 13-year-old female advisors who watched every screening of the film and provided feedback." He emphasised that making a Pixar film involves continuous conversations with a diverse group of experts, including teenagers. The team also consulted professors and PhDs, creating a rich tapestry of insights to inform the character development.

The director highlighted the value of the teen advisers' input, saying they played a crucial role in ensuring the film's authenticity. Mann shared, "They've been incredibly helpful, telling us what's right, what's wrong, what resonates with them, and what doesn't. The only way to achieve this accuracy is by going straight to the source." He underscored that the collaboration with the girls on set was vital for understanding what would work in the film.

Mann's approach reflects a commitment to accurately portraying the emotional landscape of a teenager. By engaging directly with teens, the filmmakers could craft a character that resonates deeply with the audience. This method not only ensured authenticity but also enriched the storytelling in ‘Inside Out 2’.

The director's remarks underline the importance of involving real-life perspectives in the creative process. The insights gained from the teen advisers were instrumental in shaping Riley's character and making the film relatable to its audience. This collaboration stands as a testament to Pixar's dedication to creating meaningful and authentic content.
