Christopher Nolan has once again captivated the industry, debuting breathtaking new footage from his upcoming epic, 'The Odyssey,' at CinemaCon 2026. According to reports, the director is trading the atomic age for a massive remake of Homer's ancient Greek classic in this project, which is his first since his Oscar-winning success with 'Oppenheimer.'

According to all reports, the director is trading the atomic age for a massive remake of Homer's ancient Greek classic in this project, which is his first since his Oscar-winning success with Oppenheimer. During Universal Pictures' presentation at CinemaCon, Nolan took the stage to explain his fascination with the source material, stating that 'The Odyssey' is not just a story, but "the story" that has defined humanity for 3,000 years.

Lead actor Matt Damon, who portrays Odysseus, underwent a metamorphosis in the video; he appeared on screen without a shirt and with a scruffy, burly beard, appearing worn out from years of war and wandering.

The Trojan Horse and the "Nightmare" of Practical Effects

The centerpiece of the CinemaCon reveal was an extended, heart-pounding sequence detailing the legendary Trojan Horse infiltration. The scene, which focused on the Greek soldiers concealed under the wooden structure, was characterized as an extremely stressful in typical Nolan way. The horrifying moment when Trojan troops started sticking spears into the horse's wooden flanks to see if it was alive was captured on camera, with one blade narrowly slicing the face of a hidden soldier who had to remain silent.

According to reports, the film was shot in Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, and Scotland. Nolan described the process as a "nightmare" in all the right ways. He commended Matt Damon for his dedication to the part, pointing out that in order to give the spectator a sense of the hardships of the voyage, the actor was physically challenged in actual caverns, mountains, and sideways rain.

This dedication to practical effects extends to the technology itself, as 'The Odyssey' is the first motion picture ever shot entirely on IMAX film using newly developed, quieter cameras.

A Powerhouse Cast and a Summer 2026 Release

The footage offered glimpses of the film's extensive supporting cast and the numerous mythological obstacles Odysseus must overcome in addition to the splendor of Troy. A brief, scary glimpse of Polyphemus, the man-eating Cyclops, and the voyage through a violent, dark storm at sea were shown to the audience. The ensemble is a who's-who of Hollywood elite, featuring Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, and Robert Pattinson as Antinous, alongside Lupita Nyong'o, Jon Bernthal, and Jesse Plemons.
