Todd Phillips recently unveiled fresh glimpses from the upcoming sequel to his 2019 DC Comics film, ‘Joker’. Titled ‘Folie à Deux’, the sequel is set to hit theatres on 4th October 2024, coinciding with the fifth anniversary of the original ‘Joker’ film. Phillips shared two new stills on Instagram on 25th December, extending holiday wishes and revealing the release date.

The initial photo features Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker glimpsed through a small window in a prison door. The second image showcases Lady Gaga in her role as Harley Quinn, locking eyes with the Joker adorned in his iconic makeup. Gaga had previously offered a sneak peek of herself in the iconic role in April, marking the end of filming for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’.

Co-star Zazie Beetz hinted at the sequel's "musical elements" in June, suggesting that audiences will be pleasantly surprised. Beetz is set to reprise her role as Sophie Dumond in the upcoming instalment. In September, Hildur Guðnadóttir, the composer for the film's score, teased that the sequel would feature "a lot of music," leaving fans eager for more details.

While much of the film remains shrouded in secrecy, the director has been dropping hints and teasers for fans throughout the year. In April, marking the end of filming, Phillips shared images of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in character.

Gaga's portrayal of Harley Quinn made its debut in February when Phillips posted a first-look image on Instagram, capturing her holding Phoenix's face with the caption "Happy Valentine’s Day." Earlier in the year, Gaga was spotted in what seemed to be a New York City shoot for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’.

The original ‘Joker’, which raked in $1 billion, narrated the story of Arthur Fleck, a struggling stand-up comedian grappling with mental health challenges, who eventually turns to a life of crime and chaos.

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ is slated as one of the DC Elseworlds titles, alongside Matt Reeves’ sequel to ‘The Batman’, intending to exist independently from the lineup managed by DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.
