Eddie Murphy is taking on a legendary role in the world of comedy, stepping in as the famously bumbling Inspector Clouseau. In a recent interview on 'The Today Show', the acclaimed actor and comedian revealed that he’ll be leading a brand-new 'Pink Panther' film, ushering in an exciting new era for the classic series.
While promoting his upcoming action-comedy 'The Pickup', Murphy shared an exciting lineup of projects. He revealed he's currently working on a George Clinton biopic and has already begun voice work for 'Shrek 5'. He revealed that he'll be stepping into the shoes of Inspector Clouseau for the upcoming installment of the 'Pink Panther' series.

Eddie Murphy Comeback as New Inspector Clouseau
Responding to co-host Al Roker's surprise, Eddie Murphy emphasized that he’s indeed the new Clouseau. When asked whether his version of the detective would retain a French accent like the original character, Murphy teased that the character might be French — or possibly Haitian — but assured fans that this version of Clouseau will bring a unique, Black identity to the screen.
The 'Pink Panther' franchise began in 1963 with its first film, introducing audiences to the unforgettable Inspector Clouseau, charmingly portrayed by Peter Sellers as a hilariously inept yet lovable detective.Sellers’ performances throughout the ’60s and ’70s became legendary, while Steve Martin later took up the mantle in the 2006 and 2009 reboots. Known for its iconic theme music and animated pink panther intros, the series has remained a staple in comedy cinema for decades.

Eddie Murphy has been in discussions about joining the franchise dating back to May 2023. His confirmed casting adds to an already packed schedule: alongside 'Shrek 5', Murphy is also voicing Donkey in a standalone film set to start production in September.He’s currently preparing to take on the role of funk pioneer George Clinton in an upcoming biopic.

Reflecting on his evolving career, Eddie Murphy shared that he now finds himself playing the “voice of reason” in his roles, a shift from the energetic “young maverick” parts he was once known for. He joked that at his age, action scenes come with a price — for both the character and the actor.
Most recently, Murphy starred in the 2023 holiday film 'Candy Cane Lane' and reprised his iconic role in 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F' in 2024. His next film, 'The Pickup', premieres on Prime Video on 6th August. Fans can also look forward to 'Shrek 5', set to hit theaters on 23rd December, 2026.
