Brendan Fraser has confirmed that a new sequel to 'The Mummy' is officially moving forward, giving fans fresh hope for a long-awaited reunion with the franchise's original stars.

During an appearance on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon' recently, Fraser revealed that the upcoming film plans to reunite the original cast and even revisit some of the iconic filming locations from the earlier movies. He explained that the team wants to give longtime fans the kind of sequel they have been asking for over the past two decades.

About The New 'The Mummy 4' Sequel

Reports from entertainment outlets have also suggested that Rachel Weisz is expected to return alongside Brendan Fraser. The new movie is reportedly being directed by filmmaking duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are known for horror hits like 'Ready or Not,' the recent 'Scream' films and 'Abigail.' Plot details and a release date have not yet been announced.

Brendan Fraser admitted he once doubted whether another sequel would actually happen because several attempts had already been made to revive the franchise over the years. After the success of the 1999 original directed by Stephen Sommers, the series continued with 'The Mummy Returns' in 2001. A third film, 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,' brought Fraser back but featured Maria Bello replacing Weisz.

The franchise was later rebooted in 2017 with Tom Cruise starring in a darker version of 'The Mummy,' but the film struggled at the box office and failed to launch a larger cinematic universe.

What More to Expect From The Upcoming Sequel?

Brendan Fraser also hinted that the new sequel may return to classic locations from the earlier films. He joked that he needed to get back into shape for the physically demanding role and even visited the 'The Mummy' ride at Universal Studios Hollywood to reconnect with the franchise.

In recent years, Fraser has enjoyed a major Hollywood comeback, highlighted by his Academy Award-winning performance in 'The Whale.' He previously shared that he believed 'The Mummy' franchise worked best as an adventurous thrill ride rather than a pure horror film, which he felt was one reason the 2017 reboot failed to connect with audiences.
