Anne Hathaway expressed gratitude that her 'Barbie' film with Sony never came to fruition, especially considering the success of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig's adaptation. Back in 2017, Hathaway was set to star in Sony's 'Barbie' film after Amy Schumer exited due to "scheduling conflicts." Despite a planned release in May 2020 with director Alethea Jones, the movie never materialized.
The fortuitous turn of events allowed Margot Robbie's production company, Lucky Chap, to pitch the idea to Warner Bros., resulting in Robbie taking the lead role and Gerwig directing. Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, Hathaway praised the blockbuster, emphasizing how Robbie and the team hit a bullseye, bringing the iconic doll to life in a way that captivated audiences globally.

Hathaway explained that the energy, anticipation and emotion generated by Robbie and Gerwig's version surpassed what she could have envisioned for the Sony project. Reflecting on the impact of the film, she commended Robbie's creative prowess and expressed excitement for the positive change the movie brought to the industry.

Addressing her past attachment to the Sony film, Hathaway acknowledged that sometimes roles find the right person and in this case, Robbie and Gerwig were the perfect fit. She also shared Schumer's revelation that her departure from the project was due to creative differences, emphasizing that not every woman envisions Barbie Land in the same way.
As Hathaway looks back on her career, she embraces the belief that everything happens for a reason. She encourages gratitude and trust in the journey, acknowledging that the right role will align with the right person at the right time. In the end, Hathaway is thrilled by the success of Robbie and Gerwig, celebrating the triumph of women in Hollywood and the positive impact their film has made.
