Kurt Cobain’s MTV Unplugged Guitar Up For Auction

Nirvana front-man Kurt Cobain’s acoustic guitar used during the band’s famous November 1993 MTV unplugged performance in New York is going under the hammer next month. The estimated starting bid of the 1959 Martin D-18E is said to be $1 million.

The guitar will be included as part of the ‘Music Icons’ sale at Julien’s Auctions, slated to take place online on June 19 and 20. Prior to the auction, the guitar will reportedly kept on display at the Hard Rock Cafe in Piccadilly Circus, London, from May 15th to 31st, and at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills, from June 15th to 19th.

Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance remains one of the band’s best-known and came five months before Kurt Cobain was found dead, aged 27, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his Seattle home. Watch this video for more.

Apart from Kurt Cobain’s guitar, the set list from the MTV Unplugged performance and the lyric sheets he used for “Plateau,” “The Man Who Sold the World,” and “Lake of Fire” will also go under the hammer. Other relics of the famous grunge group that are up for grabs include smashed Fender Stratocaster used by Cobain during the band’s 1994 ‘In Utero’ tour and the shirt he wore in the ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ music video.
