2020 may be a rollercoaster ride of mostly bad news for a lot of the world right now. But, if you’re The Weeknd, the year is nothing but a slew of successes. The R&B singer-songwriter has had nothing short of a mammoth year in terms of music, subsequent achievements and chart-topping moments. And, now, he’s officially bagged one of the biggest honours in commercial pop music: performer at the iconic Super Bowl Half Time show.

The NFL Super Bowl may be one of the biggest nights in the American sport calendar. But, it’s equally important for musicians in the Western music industry. And, for good reason too – the show goes down in annual history as the most watched TV programme every year. Now, from Beyonce and Bruno Mars to Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, the Super Bowl roster boasts some of pop music’s biggest names. And, The Weeknd joins the list in pure style this year.

The ‘Blinding Lights’ hitmaker took to Twitter to share the news earlier today. Sharing a poster of the upcoming event, he wrote “Performing on the iconic stage. See you 02/07/21”. Further, speaking about the opportunity, he said, “We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl and one can only dream of being in that position. I’m humbled, honored and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year.”

Earlier this year, The Weeknd released his studio album, “After Hours”, and met with great commercial success. The album featured the No. 1 singles ‘Blinding Lights’ and ‘Heartless’, and went on to become the best selling R&B album of all time.

The Super Bowl LV will be held at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2021.
