Selena Gomez Sends Off Graduates From Immigrant Families

With many musicians, we yearn to hear tid bits about their life in quarantine. But with Selena Gomez, all her updates are served up on a platter, free for all. Over the past few weeks she’s given us a list of stuff to do, to keep busy during this period. She’s given us a peek into her wild cooking skills. And she’s even given us a list of movies to binge. But currently, she’s making headlines for a very different reason. Selena honoured this year’s graduates who are part of immigrant families with a special video message.

The star took the time to film a short speech from home. She marked this special moment for high school and college students. It was a part of the Immigrad 2020 Virtual Commencement.

She started off by emphasizing the importance of this event, even though it was just a virtual ceremony.

“I know that this is a virtual ceremony, but it is very real, and it’s very real to all the families and all of you and your communities, I want you guys to know that you matter and that your experiences are a huge part of the American story.”

Selena Gomez and Her Experiences

She went on to talk about some of the experiences she’s faced, pointing out that they’re not unique. She touched upon the fact that while at times, one can feel like an outsider, it doesn’t take away their right to education. Or to make their parents proud by achieving something.

“When my family came here from Mexico they set into motion my American story, as well as theirs. I’m a proud third-generation American-Mexican, and my family’s journey and their sacrifices helped me get me to where I am today, “she said.

“Each and every one of you have a similar tale of becoming an American. Regardless of where your family is from, regardless of your immigration status, you have taken action to earn an education, to make your families proud and to open up your worlds. So I’m sending all of my love to you guys today and congratulations, and I hope that you guys are set off to be everything that you want to be.”

Celebrities across the globe are coming together to send off graduates, who are missing out on what would have been their actual ceremony. So, despite the fact that everyone’s stuck behind a screen. It still marks a very special moment for all of them. And artists all over are helping them acknowledge just that.
