Melissa Etheridge, a brave woman who paved the path for the LGBTQ+ community in the music industry, has lost her son, Beckett Cypher, today at the age of 21.

Earlier today Melissa Etheridge tweeted the following:

“Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction. My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today. He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends. My heart is broken.”

Melissa Etheridge had been co-parenting Beckett with Julie Cypher after they conceived the child through artificial insemination. It was later revealed that the father was David Crosby.

During the lockdown, Melissa had been supporting the cause that she had always been passionate about and was one of the industry pioneers. She sang during the ‘Together In PrideYou Are Not Alone’ online event by GLAAD in which Kesha, Barbra Streisand, and Adam Lambert were party too.

Melissa Etheridge came out to the world early on and spoke publicly about the living and co-parenting arrangement she had going on with Julie Cypher. For 2000s, this was progressive.

“I will sing again, soon. It has always healed me,” she concluded her tweet.
