Megan Thee Stallion & Cardi B’s ‘WAP’ Features All the Usual Suspects

Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B finally dropped their highly anticipated track, ‘WAP’. At its essence, this tune arrives as a seductive, pleasurable dish, and yet, one that also leaves behind an uncomfortable aftertaste.

The tune opens with Cardi’s characteristic growls and steamy verses, which set the pace for the rest of the song. But the moment it segues into Megan’s verse, the stark difference between their rap styles is highlighted. Stallion shakes things up with quick, fiery rhymes which seamlessly transition into the groovy chorus. While both their styles do complement each other and create an interesting shift in pace, neither artists seem to be setting foot outside their comfort zones.

So, is ‘WAP’ Lyrically Strong?

With its lowkey, well-paced beats and rhymes that run into each other, ‘WAP‘ forces you to sit up and pay attention to each verse. Now, if the song’s lyrical content were ripe enough (no pun intended) it would hold your attention from start to finish. But the problem is, it’s not. The lyrics are sensual and rather cliched. And to be completely honest, you can only groove to the words “wet and gushy” for so long. Sadly, it does lose its charm very soon. A glimpse at their verses will allow a better understanding of this:

Your honor, I’m a freak b*tch, handcuffs, leashes
Switch my wig, make him feel like he cheatin’
Put him on his knees, give him somethin’ to believe in
Never lost a fight, but I’m lookin’ for a beatin’
In the food chain, I’m the one that eat ya

Now, believe it or not, we’ve actually picked out the least explicit lyrics. Some would argue that Cardi and Megan are feeding off of the shock value that arrives with the incredibly explicit lyrics. And perhaps one could even go the extra mile and say that both stars are reclaiming female sexuality by explicitly discussing pleasure and intimacy – topics more commonly adopted by male artists in the Hip Hop world. But this argument again wouldn’t hold strong considering that some of the biggest female rap stars have been spitting rhymes about their sexuality for years now.

Here’s What The ‘WAP’ Visuals Offer Up

Now, coming to the music video, the visuals are equally sensual and even a bit absurd. It all takes place in a mansion that looks quite lavish on the outside but more like a fun-house on the inside. Cardi and Megan are seen frolicking with snakes and wild cats as they deliver their respective verses. They also travel from room to room within this “fun house” to take a peek at its various occupants. And on a more exciting note, the video features some surprise cameos from Kylie Jenner, Rosaliá, Normani, Rubi Rose and more, all settling into their fancy rooms.

Now, if the idea behind this collaboration was to simply put out something simple and fun, then both artists have succeeded on that front. But perhaps it would also have been nice to see Megan and Cardi tap into their full potential.
