Demi Lovato Comes Out As Non-Binary

28-year-old American singer Demi Lovato has come out as being Non-binary and has chosen the pronouns they/them to identify themselves from now on.

Demi shared this news with the world on May 19th through a video on their social media handle. “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all. I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward,” Lovato wrote in their tweet.

“I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression, and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering.”

In a series of follow-up tweets, the Sorry Not Sorry singer shares that this decision regarding their gender identity has “come after a lot of healing & self-reflective work. I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me.”

They add that they are “doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones.” and also sends “so much love your way”.

According to Human Rights Campaign, Non-binary is a term used to refer to individuals who do not conform with their traditional gender identities as being only male or female. They could identify as both a man and a woman, in between the two genders, or not a part of any gender category at all

Grammy Award-winning singer, Sam Smith is another artist in the music industry who has identifies themselves as being non-binary. “After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.” was what they had shared with their fans on their social media when they came out in 2019.
