Daddy Yankee Creates Billboard History

‘King Of Reggaeton’ and Puerto Rican rapper, Daddy Yankee just added another feather to his cap after creating Billboard history. The rapper achieved this feat after bagging the most top 10s on the Latin Airplay chart for the first time since its genesis in 1994.

Daddy Yankee was in a tie with Enrique Iglesias on the charts until his Marc Anthony collab – ‘De Vuelta Pa’ La Vuelta’ crawled up the charts to No.8 on January 16th 2021.

The ‘Despacito’ singer has a total of 41 top 10s on the Latin Airplay charts. 22 of these hit No.1 spot including ‘Despacito’ that featured Luis Fonsi and Justin Bieber as well. The track spent 19 weeks at the top.

Highlights!

Billboard is celebrating this milestone of Daddy Yankee by highlighting his tracks from the Latin Airplay chart that have spent at least 2 weeks at the No.1 spot.

Rompe: This track hit the No.1 spot on December 10th 2005 and stayed tight at the spot for 15 long weeks.

Daddy Yankee reigned the charts with this track that was a 2005 hit, for more than three months before ‘Despacito’ rocketed to No.1. ‘Gasolina’ and ‘Despacito’ that talks about him being the best lad in his lane helped DY and his music style reggaeton and Latin hip-hop shoot to popularity across the globe.

Nota de Amor: This track saw Wisin & Carlos Vives collaborate with Daddy Yankee to create a No.1 hit in 2015. ‘Nota de Amor’ stayed at the top for two weeks starting April 25th.

Daddy Yankee flaunts his romantic side in the track, a side of him that is not exposed often in his music. The perfect fusion of urban-tropipop and Vives’ vallenato sound makes the track a feel-good one with Yankee rapping at his usual quick-pace.

The People’s Favourite!

Despacito: This super hit track made Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee the new listener’s favourite duo. The track reigned at the No.1 spot for 19 weeks beginning March 11, 2017.

The iconic bilingual remix of this track with the duo and Justin Bieber created history after the video amassed a generous 7 billion views on YouTube. Speaking to Billboard. Luis Fonsi said, “Yankee gave it that energy, I don’t have that in my voice. He’s a hype man. He has that ability to get you out of your seat.”

Dura: The track that topped charts for five weeks and hit No.1 on March 17th, 2018 was released by Daddy Yankee following the major success of ‘Despacito’. ‘Dura’ was a vibrant and high tempo reggaeton hit that forced its listeners to get on their feet grooving. The remix of the track has Yankee with Becky G, Natti Natasha and Bad Bunny.  

The Epic Remake

Con Calma: ‘Con Calma’ by Daddy Yankee & Katy Perry feat. Snow became the No.1 song on March 16, 2019 ruling the charts for eight weeks.

DY said on Instagram, “To transcend different cultures singing in my language and representing it has been a core mission since the beginning of my career”. The track is a bilingual remake of the 1992 hit by Snow called ‘Informer’.  

Soltera: ‘Soltera’ by Lunay, Daddy Yankee & Bad Bunny peaked at No. 1 on July 13, 2019 and stayed at the top for two weeks.

The track remix by Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny and Lunay was regarded as the anthem for single ladies. The music video saw the three stars crash a bachelorette party dancing atop giant cakes and cozying up to women popping champagne bottles.

China: A track in collab of Daddy Yankee, Anuel AA, Karol G, J Balvin & Ozuna peaked at No.1 on 21st September 2019 ad continued to stay atop the charts for two weeks.

A fun and energetic urban-meets-EDM track, ‘China’ is a revival of the times les single ‘It Wasn’t Me’ by Shaggy. Drawing similarities to the hit, infidelity and getting caught in the act are elements that are common to the two tracks.

Que Tire Pa’ Lante: The uptempo reggaeton track,Que Tire Pa’ Lante’ peaked at No. 1 on Dec. 21, 2019 and ruled at the top for three weeks.

A dancehall song about a girl who is a great dancer that Daddy Yankee compliments by saying “que tire pa’ lante?,” asking her to flaunt more of her dance moves. The track has folks of all ages and cultures grooving to its infectious beat.
