Coldplay gave their fans an out-of-the-world surprise on Thursday(May 6) when they dropped their new single ‘Higher Power‘ which was debuted in space. They roped in French astronaut Thomas Pesquet, who is currently onboard the International Space Station, to help them out with the release of this track.

The music video for the song also has quite the extraterrestrial vibe to it as it features holographic aliens dancing in it! Check out the video below.

Not The First, But Definitely Not The Last

For those who are impressed by this space debut of a music track, allow us to share another surprising fact. This isn’t the first time it’s happened! Back in 1965, the crew onboard NASA’s Gemini VI-A played the Christmas holiday classic, Jingle Bells, making it the first song to be played in space. It even got into the Guinness Book Of World Records!

Since then, a few other songs such as Elvis Presley’s ‘Heartbreak Hotel‘ and David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity have also joined the club.

Listen to the astronauts play the Jingle Bells tune on a harmonica at 0:54 seconds into the transmission.

Higher power is reportedly the first single to the band’s upcoming ninth studio album that had initially been scheduled for release on May 7th. But hey, none of us are complaining about the change! Now that they have covered both earth as well as space, we wonder what’s next on their list?
