Check Out The 2022 Brit Awards International Nominees

The nominees for international group of the year at the Brit Awards in February are really global: There’s Måneskin from Italy, BTS from South Korea, ABBA from Sweden, and Silk Sonic and The War on Drugs from the United States.

BTS, who lost to HAIM last year, and The War on Drugs, who lost to Foo Fighters in 2015, are both nominated in that category for the second time. (Of course, American acts like HAIM and the Foo Fighters are seen as “international” in the United Kingdom.)

Despite the Grammy Awards’ recent postponement until the spring owing to the fast-spreading Omicron strain, the Brit Awards are still scheduled for 8th February at London’s O2 Arena. Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift are the five American acts contending for international artist of the year.

The Brits will provide a single, gender-neutral category for international solo performers for the first time in 29 years. In the now-defunct international female solo artist category, two of this year’s candidates won. In both 2020 and 2021, Eilish took home the award. Swift won the award in 2015 after being nominated three times and losing to Lana Del Rey in 2013, Lorde in 2018, and Eilish in 2021.

At this year’s Brit Awards, a total of 25 musicians have been nominated for best international song. (There are fifteen singles nominated, although six of them are by numerous artists.) Nine artists from the United States (Eilish, Doja Cat, SZA, Lil Baby, Lil Nas X, Lil Tjay, 6lack, Rodrigo, and Polo G), three from Canada (Drake, Justin Bieber, and The Weeknd), three from Germany (ATB, Topic, and Jonasu), two from Nigeria (CKay and Joeboy), two from Sweden (A7S and Galantis), and one each from Australia (The Kid LAROI) , Ghana (Kuami Eugene), France (David Guetta), Britain (Little Mix), Italy (Måneskin) and The Netherlands (Tiësto).

Guetta is nominated for both song of the year, which is reserved for British bands, and best international song, which is reserved for acts from outside of Britain, in an unusual twist. That’s because at least half of the musicians on his two song of the year candidates are British. For “Bed,” he collaborates with Joel Corry and Raye, while for “Remember,” he collaborates with Becky Hill.

However, barely one-third of the artists on “Heartbreak Anthem,” his greatest worldwide song contender, are British. On that record, he collaborates with Galantis from Sweden and Little Mix from the United Kingdom. The international group award was first given out in 1986. It went to 18 American bands, three Australian bands (INXS, Crowded House, and Tame Impala), two Irish bands (U2 and The Corrs), and one each from Canada and France (Arcade Fire and Daft Punk).
