Billie Strips at A Live Concert

All hail because Billie Eilish has done it again – powerful female energy at its best; and damn, does it look good on her.

The global superstar took the stage at Miami for a concert recently, and used the chance to send a clear message to body shamers, of which there have been many. During a brief interlude in between sets at the concert, fans saw a 2 and a half minute video play out on screen.

The video starts with Billie clad in an oversized black jacket, open platinum blonde hair and her signature acrylic nails. At the beginning, nothing seems out of place – what’s more Billie than her signature baggy clothing, right? Well, surprises await everyone as Eilish soons starts to strip down to nothing but her bra. From videos that were circulated on the internet shortly after the concert ended, it’s clear that the audience had no idea what they were about to witness; surprise and awe echoing through the crowds.

The 18 year old has always been very vocal about her body image issues, even admitting at one point that she and her body have shared “the most unhealthy relationship”. Her choice to wear baggy, oversized clothes too, is rooted in the fear of being judged and oversexualised by the media. Billie has spoken at length about the various other issues that stemmed from her body image issues, including severe anxiety and depression.

Well, in Miami on the 10th of March, her confidence and clarity took centre stage, leaving no room for misinterpretation. It quoted her saying “If I wear if I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed the layers, I’m a slut. Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it and judge me for it. Why? We make assumptions about people based on their size. If I wear more, if I wear less, who decides what that makes me?

While most in the press have lauded her for her courage, some parties have also voiced the opinion that her stripping down to her delicates is perpetrating the same sexualisation that she claims to be against; that it takes away from her message – focus on my music, not my body.
