Sam Smith & Songwriting; Their Capturing of Melancholia

Sam Smith recently created quite the storm after resurfacing with news of a brand new single. Since the release of their heart wrenching tune, ‘To Die For’ it’s been all quiet on the music front. Smith only popped in to reassure fans that they would be dropping a new album but it wouldn’t be arriving anytime soon. While they didn’t specify any release date, they did however mention that the album would undergo a change in title as it was initially to be named, ‘To Die For’.

And now, a good five months later, they dropped the tune ‘My Oasis,’ featuring Nigerian superstar, Burna Boy. Speaking of this collaboration, Smith had this to say, “This track has been a beautiful release of emotions for me during this time. I’ve been a fan of Burna Boy for years now and am so happy to have a tune with him.”

Now, the star has always had a fascinating way of capturing melancholia through his lyrics. No Sam Smith song makes its landing without touching a raw nerve and perhaps that’s their speciality. They string together an array of emotions and often pair it up with a certain amount of vulnerability and self-reflection. So, if their music often manages to brings you to tears, and you can’t put your finger on why you had such an emotional response – then they’ve clearly done the job right. And so, go ahead and gather some tissues because we’re giving you a look at some of Sam’s most moving lyrics through the years…
